Definitely! There is a reason why they are affectionately known as "German Shedders." German Shepherds have a double coat consisting of a harsher outer coat of guard hairs and a fluffier insulating under coat. They typically "blow coat" twice a year. During those periods you can rake enough dead hair out each day to build a whole Llasa Apso. During the rest of the year a quick once over with a slicker or pin brush will be sufficient, but during shedding an undercoat rake (special tool for removing dead undercoat) is essential.

yes very badly especially in the summer if you want to slow it down wash them at least three times a week & brush them after washing them

It is supposed to be a yearly thing hence the need to brush almot dailey but long hairs are suppose to shed a lot more.

I own five German Shepherds and I always tell people that THEY SHED ONCE, ALL YEAR! LOL.

Length of a dog's fur has NO bearing on how much they shed. It's a myth that "short haired dogs shed less".... actually most shed a lot, they just shed a lot of shorter hairs!

Also note that many true "non-shedding" dogs happen to have very long hair!!

They have a double coat, to far both cold and hot weather.

Husky's and Malamutes also share the coat type.

So, when the weather becomes hot, the coat sheds to become thinner, and as winter dawns the coat has a 'blow shed' to have thicker hair replace it for the dropping temperature.

All throughout the year but they also have a 'blow' stage where their fur is totally stripped, it can be a monster for the carpets.
