Marines call home during mct?
yes they can call home , they can even bring their own cell phones if the have one. Marines are not recruits in MCT , they wil be able to contact their family members , during the times they are allowed to.
You know a lot of prior service Marines join the Army but are there a lot of prior service Soldiers that join the Marines?
It does happen, but I don't think it happens as often as the reverse. When I was in MCT(Marine Combat Training) in '99, we had a former Army SSGT who came through with us, he was a Lance Corporal(E-3)at the time since the Marines don't really carry over rank, but he did gain Corporal by the time he left the 2.5 week course. otherwise, in 4 years I never came across any other former soldiers. I have met numerous soldiers who were prior service Marines, and seemed quite successful at it.

Why is the Marines so much better then the Army?
The Marine Corps have the toughest boot camp in the entire world...they are the nations finest warriors - this branch is the most physically demanding out of all other branches because you have to run 3 miles in 28 minutes - plus they are the only branch that requires you do dead hang pull ups (unless you're a chick in which you do something similar) but also you must do about 55 sit ups in 2 minutes and 5 dead hang pull ups...the whole mentality of the Marine Corps is toughness, the Crucible which is the 'final exam' if you will, of boot camp is tougher than anything any other boot camp has to endure (you should look up the USMC crucible it's really interesting)...Marines need to be hardcore because they are the tip of the spear, so to speak, the first one to go on, kickin down the door if you will...unless of course you count like navy seals but you have to go to boot camp before you can become a seal, and marine corps boot camp is the best one to prepare you for seals or anything like that.

Are US Marines better trained than US Navy SEALs?
No, the SEALs are specialists, whereas Marines are standard military - excellent standard - but the SEALs have gone far ahead of them in their training. It honestly depends on what the SEALS are being compared to. In the sake of comparison, take a normal Administrative Marine (this is not due to bias) who may have never been deployed, not received any advanced degree in combat training aside from what we learn through boot camp and MCT, and is generally too busy with duties to advance him or herself in their knowledge and training. We'll call this our mediocre Marine. Compared to say a standard Navy enlisted man or woman whom fulfills the same billet or job, and rest assured the Marine will be better trained for combat in almost every instance. Take that same Marine and compare him to a Navy SEAL who has undergone extensive combat, survival and self defense training, and the SEAL will be the one who will be better suited for combat instances. However, take a top echelon Marine, say one that has been through Force Recon training who puts extreme emphasis on his personal level of training and fitness, and there isn't really anything on the face of this earth, short of a biomechanical robot made specifically for combat, that will be considered better trained.
