No, merpeople are fictitious creatures. The stories appeared in Assyria around 1000 BC. Mermaids and mermen only live in creative works such as art and literature. Mermaids exist in some form of myth or legend in almost every area of the world. The most well known modern mermaid is most likely Disney's version of the Hans Christian Andersen creation,
The Little Mermaid.
It is thought that no such creature exists in the ocean today, but there are several animals that are existent from which the stories could have been born, the sea cow for example including the dugong and some manatee. The mermaid story is one of the oldest legends among seafaring folk and although even the most drunken sailor could not mistake the face of a cow for that of a beautiful women, it is still believed that these animals gave arise to the stories. When these creature come up for air they hold their heads above water and remain in an upright position for sometime. At a distance the head might easily be mistaken for that of a human, and this resemblance is heightened when a female appears holding their young with their flippers.
Another factor to consider is the lack of reports about mermen, as the sailors would have been far more interested in the fairer sex, and the romantic image of a mermaid would have been a welcomed one, real or not.
Actually scientists have found what seems to be mermaid mummies in Fiji . So yes mermaids are real. People just don't see them . Only if you fish in the Fiji waters will you find mermaids OR mermaid mummies .
A FACT!!!: Scientists also found a another skeleton in Haiti. For every skeleton found in the world I say mermaids "maybe mermen" do exist. About seven have been found.
The Fiji mermaid mummies are
There is a hoax, called the Fiji mermaid, which has been around for some time. This deception resurfaced again recently after the 2004 tsunami disaster. The fake mermaids consisted of the top half of dead mammals such as monkeys stitched onto the back half of a fish. Compared to our classic view of mermaids, they were quite disturbing.
Other mythological human-animal hybrids include satyrs, minotaurs, and centaurs.
- It depends if you believe or not because if you believe in mermaids you will go on the internet and look up all about them. Some sailing and fishing people have seen tails flicking in the air and faces in the water.
- But that is not to say that they are real, they could just be fake but if you don't believe in them you won't look on every internet page for them so they can't say if they are real or not because they are just going off what they think and not what everybody else thinks.
You never know if mermaids do exist. Scientifically it is not possible but it just might be and you never know the sea is a vast place.
- Of course mermaids could exist if god wanted them to but we should keep in mind science. But it is mysterious because so many countries have tales got to do with them, I mean did they just randomly get ideas, there has to be some truth in it and that truth might be mermaids!
- Of course it's not " scientifically" possible! but listen we are talking enchantment here , not science.Maybe mermaids have a whole new scientific meaning , And as the bible is concern , maybe GOD found it not important to mention them in the bible.Although, I do believe in them. :)
