In order to be a Military Police Officer you MUST be on active duty. Now if you are on active duty but have some down time and want to go off base you CAN carry your weapon with you. Under the United States Constitution MP's are "qualified law enforcement officers".

SEC. 2. EXEMPTION OF QUALIFIED LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS FROM STATE LAWS PROHIBITING THE CARRYING OF CONCEALED FIREARMS.

(a) In General- Chapter 44 of title 18, United States Code, is amended by inserting after section 926A the following:

`Sec. 926B. Carrying of concealed firearms by qualified law enforcement officers

`(b) This section shall not be construed to supersede or limit the laws of any State that--

`(1) permit private persons or entities to prohibit or restrict the possession of concealed firearms on their property; or

`(2) prohibit or restrict the possession of firearms on any State or local government property, installation, building, base, or park.

`(c) As used in this section, the term `qualified law enforcement officer' means an employee of a governmental agency who--

`(1) is authorized by law to engage in or supervise the prevention, detection, investigation, or prosecution of, or the incarceration of any person for, any violation of law, and has statutory powers of arrest;

`(2) is authorized by the agency to carry a firearm;

`(3) is not the subject of any disciplinary action by the agency;

`(4) meets standards, if any, established by the agency which require the employee to regularly qualify in the use of a firearm;

`(5) is not under the influence of alcohol or another intoxicating or hallucinatory drug or substance; and

`(6) is not prohibited by Federal law from receiving a firearm.

`(d) The identification required by this subsection is the photographic identification issued by the governmental agency for which the individual is employed as a law enforcement officer.

`(e) As used in this section, the term `firearm' does not include--

`(1) any machinegun (as defined in section 5845 of the National Firearms Act);

`(2) any firearm silencer (as defined in section 921 of this title); and

`(3) any destructive device (as defined in section 921 of this title).'.

Yes, military police officers do have military vehicles and military weapons. However what equipment they use depends on what environment they're working in. If working in a normal base environment they normally use equipment similar to that of civilian police forces. But if in a war environment they would have equipment suitable to there (ie: armoured vehicle, mounted machine guns, etc)

What type of Firearm do Canadian Police use?

The make and model of firearm varies from one police agency to another, but most Canadian police carry 9mm or .40 caliber semi-automatic pistols. This is also the case in the United States. The biggest distinction is that U.S. police generally carry their firearms when off duty, while Canadian police rarely do.

California Security guard carry gun to work?

It is my understanding that a California Security Guard is allowed to carry their firearm to and from their place of employment. However, I would encourage Guards to not travel in uniform when leaving work, therefore negating the ability to carry their firearm. Wearing a uniform give the impression of authority and even police officers have been killed off duty when wearing their uniform.

Did any of the Fort Hood victims carry weapons?

The answer is no. Based on a military base standard of conduct, only members of the military police carry weapons on a base when on duty. A bases' weapons are kept and registered to individual soldiers. Should it be necessary to have a weapon for practice or some type of military maneuver, the weapons are checked out of the places where they are kept.

Because of their occupation, they can be exempted from the general prohibition against firearms possession - WHILE ON DUTY - but it is not automatically granted. They must ask for and be granted that limited right.

Can department of veterans affairs police officers carry off duty?

Legally and lawfully - if they are considered to be sworn law enforcement officers by the state, they may legally carry a firearm. HOWEVER - their agency (Dept. of Veterans Affairs) may have some kind of an agency policy or rule that states that they may not. Under H.R. 218, VA police officers are given lawful authority to carry off-duty. This is a mandate by Congress which allows ALL federal law enforcement to carry off-duty. Though a VA facility may prohibit the bringing of off-duty firearms to work, the facility cannot overturn the Congress in terms of H.R 218.
