*It is recommended to be under doctor supervision while on prenatal vitamins.

Prenatal vitamins have been reported in many women as causing weight gain despite regularly exercising & eating the way they had before. Due to the fact that many of these vitamins come in different dosages results can vary.

Some symptoms in association with taking prenatal vitamins include decrease in appetite, headaches, muscle pain & aches, constipation/& or diarrhea, nausea, upset stomach, & could even potentially effect the liver negatively due to unintentionally overloading the liver with iron or other vitamins. Due to iron therapy it could even cause metal toxicity & if you have black or tarry stools you are recommended to see a doctor immediately.

Many women who are not yet pregnant yet are taking Birth Control (especially over the counter ones) have been reporting weight gain, nausea, and headaches - yet due to ignorance in the medical community are being told that it is not due to changes in their vitamin intake. Most don't have side effects, thus they cannot relate that to the percentage that do.

If you are keeping a healthy diet, & a healthy lifestyle (similar as before you had started the prenatal vitamins) & you experience weight gain or notice anything out of the ordinary - you might be experiencing them due to your body adjusting to the vitamins. Many women swear that they are experiencing weight gain despite keeping their previous life style. Although doctors are not infallible & may have differing opinions due to lack of research or updated knowledge on prenatal vitamins, you must still always talk with your doctor before & while on prenatal vitamins. It is recommended by many of the manufacturers -of- prenatal vitamins along by most other doctors. Not everyone has side effects, but there is a percentage that does. Educate yourself & always listen to your body. If you need a second opinion - get it. If you need a third opinion, get one, but always educate yourself. Doctors cannot feel or experience what you do, you are your biggest advocate for a healthy life.

I think so. I am not pregnant and never was but started taking materna a few months ago thinking all the vitamins would giuve me extra energy as I am slightly anemic. I am a vegetarian and ended up gaining 10 pounds in two months and have since stopped takin them.

It was not normail weight gain...my boobs, but n belly got swollen even my doc thought i was preggers even though I never missed a period n pregnancy tests came back negative. Yesterday my mom said it was the materna.

Go figure

You should be ok, vitamins would be the last thing to worry about, but switch to prenatal vitamins right away, you can buy them over the counter at drugstores. It depends what vitamins you are talking about, there are many different vitamins. Some can be extremely dangerous in pregnancy. If they are prescribed talk to your doctor but if not, as the above answer says take only pre-natal vitamins.

Can you start taking vitamins when you are one month old pregnant?

Yes, in moderation. If you are prescribed pre-natal vitamins, then take them as directed. if you're buying off-the-shelf vitamins, take THOSE as directed. Some vitamins can be toxic when taken to excess (like vitamin A), and some are OK in any amount (like vitamin C). if you are eating a properly balanced diet, you probably don't NEED vitamins, but for a newly pregnant mom-to-be, a folic acid supplement (taken in accordance with the directions, no more!) isn't a bad idea.
