Yes, squirrels will eat plants.
Specifically, the mammal in question favors the product of woody plants (trees): nuts. In fact, a squirrel basically is a herbivore (plant eater). So it will eat the parts of both herbaceous and woody plants.
Unlikely. Unusually, squirrels cannot digest cellulose. Once in a while they will eat vegetation but it is not a main staple. Squirrels are, at this point, omnivorous scavengers who can easily be trained to rely on the gifting of peanuts to them, say, by students at a college where both the squirrel and the student have become endemic. When faced with the danger of starvation, a squirrel might chew a tomato; then again, it might also feel forced to eat a mouse. None of this would be its diet of choice. If you are having problems with vegetable garden pests, your most likely bet is NOT squirrels.
I have been struggling all this summer to grow our first tomato garden here in Nova Scotia. High winds, heavy rains and deer have taken their toll on the plants. Now we have a problem with a small red squirrel! This guy is actually picking them off the vines, anything from green to red and up to 2" diameter, then eating them. He'll consume 6-10 cherry tomatoes a day or 2-3 of the larger variety. Do squirrels eat tomatoes? That's a definite YES.
I have been looking for the answer because my father told me squirrels are eating his tomatoes. I found reference that the squirrels are most likely thursty. Leave out some water plates, etc. Also try sprinkling coffee grounds around plants.
This is not likely. Most do not know or do and just do not want to chew.

well what ever the lynxes eat will get a higher population and there will be less plants, for example say if lynxes eat squirrels and squirrels eat plants if the lynxes die then there are more squirrels and the more squirrels there are, well the squirrels would eat the plants and if there are more squirrels the more the plants are eaten so less plants and life on earth this would also happen with other animals oh and check out new hollow they are my favorite band.
Squirrels can eat plants and they do eat a variety of vegetation. Squirrels dine on nuts, seeds, fruits, conifer cones, and leafy green plants.
Squirrels mainly eat acorns, nuts and other vegetation. Occasionally they will eat insects. But the flying squirrels will eat small birds and insects.
In my area we have only red squirrels they don't eat my tomatoes. I don't know about grey squirrels though. Tomato plants are from the nightshade family and are poisonous[apart from the fruit of course]. We have lots of deer around us but they never touch the tomato plants. I'd give them a go if I were you.
Squirrels can be considered vegetarian in that they naturally eat various seeds, nuts, and plants. Squirrels in kore urban areas may also eat food scraps left out by people, too.
Yes, squirrels will eat grasses and other plants.Specifically, squirrels by preference function as herbivores (plant eaters). They prioritize eating the nuts and seeds of woody plants (trees). But they also will graze upon grasses and herbaceous plants. Basically they will like what they can find when they cannot find what they like.
