Sweet potatoes are not actually sweet. They are called sweet potatoes because they are not bland, and people back in the day had never tasted such a good potato before. Because they considered candy as sweet food and they knew that it was a potato they decided to call it a sweet potato, and because no one ever had an idea what to rename it to, the name went down into history. So for now the orange potato is known as the sweet potato.
