Society and the media have some influence on the self-esteem of young people, but the determining factors in the development of self-esteem are more closely related to the home environment, and the child's upbringing. there are 4 basic elements that any child must have from his or her parents in order to develop his or her self-esteem, love, flexibility, communication, and to feel valuable.
all of these elements are not only related to having the parents demonstrate them towards the child by, providing a loving, and trustworthy relationship, but by them feeling lovable and trustworthy. What I mean by this is that a child will learn his or her own value by the example that his or her parent portray for him or her and by the love and value he or she receives from them.
Answer
Yes. But, the media is not all of the problem. The media glamorizes models. Teen-aged girls feel that to compete in today's world, they have to be the size of models. If they aren't, this lowers their self-esteem. Other factors also play into this situation. Examples are: Peer pressure, family life, education level, boyfriends or the lack there of, and the society in which they live. Yes, the media does play a part. But, you can't blame it all on the media. The best rule of thumb is to remember that "it is okay to say no; that you are loved by GOD; and that it is best to be an individual even if it means being different".
