Answer
With increased threats from terrorism on U.S. interests, all cruise ships embarking in U.S. Ports now screen luggage via x-ray before it is brought on board. The cruise lines are generally looking for the following prohibited items: weapons, explosives and anything that converts energy into heat - steam irons and hotplates are big culprits. Also, if you have liquor, knives, tools etc - expect that your bag may be held aside for secondary screening. Most cruise lines will have you present when they open the bag in the security office on board before they will release the bag to you. Liquor bought on shore will generally not be released back to you until the last night of your voyage.
