Contributors here are simply people like you and me who like to help so no they are not paid. We though have competitions like Answerthons in which you are required to answer questions and the person who answers the most get some gift card prizes.

Yes, there is a staff of people who maintain and administer the site, but the vast majority of contributors are ordinary people from around the world. As you have experienced, there are disadvantages to wikis, but as you jump in and begin to have fun answering questions as well as asking them, you'll get to have a different experience of the site. By the way, I am NOT one of the paid staff.
Because thousands of questions are asked and it's just a small group of volunteers that answer them all. We're not paid and it's very difficult with some of the questions people ask.
