Best Answer

Regularly. Also, schmuts in the coolant fluid can clog or jam the operation of the valve. Even new replacement ones should be tested before being installed, as they also are known to be bad fairly regularly ....or highly inaccurate.

Can a low compression car run?

For the most part yes, but not very well. Also, cars with bad compression most likely have worn out cylinders. This is VERY costly to fix often requiring them to be resurfaced, as well as installed with new pistons.

How often should a thermostat be replaced?

The great majority of cars probably go to the auto salvage lots with their original thermostats intact, especially the very well engineered and built ones (and the Honda Civic qualifies). In short, the thermostat is a good example of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". If the engine begins to overheat - or never gets to normal operating temperature - and coolant levels are normal, a bad 'stat is the first thing to suspect, of course. But on today's vehicles, it's a rare occurrence.
