Turtles have a far greater sense of smell than even the famed bloodhound. Every sense of the turtle is beyond the capacity of any other animal on the planet.
However, turtles cannot hear very well as they are missing an eardrum.
I have just discovered this while playing with security cam. Focused it on turtles in pond. (see what they really do when im not watching.) Ends up Doing what I would figure... Bask in SUN!!! about every 20-30 min. do lap around pond then back to there ROCK. When they would come back up on to land they would actually SNIFF like a dog does. Never noticed it before but they will have there heads up, way up, and I noticed there noses SNIFFING. They seem to get a lot from sniffing cuz they would do it for minutes at a time. never really thought about them smelling.
By the way, cant figure out how they KNOW when Im watching them on CAM. As soon as view cam. They would get abit jumpy or edgie and even look straight in to cam. sometimes jump off sometimes just look a bit annoyed and keep an eye on me.
Just something I've observed..
Turtles are thought to have exceptional night vision due to the unusually large number of rod cells in their retinas. Turtles have color vision with a wealth of cone subtypes with sensitivities ranging from the near Ultraviolet (UV A) to Red.
No. Turtles' shells are one of the bones in their bodies. It is actually part of their backbone. They are born attached to them.
Actually, yes they can. The only type of turtle that can't blink, is a snapping turtle. All others can. [:
When they are young they they can't see in color. They can when they turn 12.
Turtles can see color as it helps with their survival techniques.

While similar (both have shells) the tortoise lives on land, and is a herbivore. The turtle lives in water, and is an omnivore. They can be distinguished by the shape of their shells- turtles are streamlined for swimming and diving, tortoises are dome shaped.
