With the history of Vulcans it's gone to say that they had to stop showing emotions like humans do because their emotions run on a different level then us.
Their emotions would cause wars. So Spock's Grandfather had started something that makes them more logic based in order to stop wars from happening.
They still do have emotions they just don't express them as we do. Spocks out burst in the new movie. Wouldn't have ever happend.
This information is coming from someone who's read and watched the shows for 20 years... so... i hope it helped.

Some people may be uncomfortable with this character shading which mirrors real life, and they prefer the straightforward good versus evil conflict of Star Wars. I think that clever peole like star trek and the rest of you just like the violence in star wars.

Only very recently do they have aliens that are nothing like humans in comparison. An ancient race influenced galactic evolutionIn the context of the Star Trek universe, an ancient race having a bipedal form which preceded most life in the galaxy took parts of its DNA and placed them in the primordial soups of various worlds. Thus, the evolutionary paths of the various species were similar, leading to similar appearances amongst the races. This was explained in "The Chase", the 20th episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation's 6th season.

In reality, there was once believed to be a planet very close to the Sun, with an orbit smaller even than Mercury's. It's was named Vulcan but never observed.
