No, actually just the opposite happens. Hot summers will produce sweeter watermelons which means that growing in cooler climates can pose a challange to growing sweet watermelons.

There are types of watermelon that can do well in cooler climates however such as the type known as 'Cream of Saskatchewan'.

Not until they are fully ripened, or picked. Then they have a fairly short edible period.

Watermelons can survive normal daytime and even tropical heat until they are ripe, when they begin to soften as the seeds finish forming inside. Until then, the constant supply of water from the vines will keep the melon fresh.

Once ripe and picked, a melon will complete its production of sugars within about a week and then will soften as the voids around the seeds grow. The skin will brown and it will go sour. Melons can be kept cool or refrigerated to extend freshness for about another week.
