Your period is the beginning of a new menstrual cycle. Women ovulate once a month usually about 14 days (give or take a few) after the first day of their last period. If you did conceive (become pregnant) with that ovulation, you will typically not ovulate anymore until you have had your baby and begin having a normal period again.

Well, of course. The only way for conception to occur would be if an ovum is present. That occurs only after ovulation. You have about a 50/50 chance, then, of conceiving a female baby.

I'm thinking the terminology you are groping for is "Can I impregnate a woman after she has ovulated?" The answer to that is also "yes".

Yes she can. I didn't even know I was pregnant with my 15 year old. I continued to have a normal period for the first 6 months. SO it is possible, but if the bleeding is heavy see a doctor ASAP.

Most women run on a 28 to 31 day cycle and ovulate around the 14th to 16th day of that cycle. You can ovulate at any point during your cycle however. You can learn when you are most fertile by charting your cycle using body temperature and cervical mucus. See related link to learn how.
