When I think of how He came so far from Glory,
Came and dwelt among the lowly such as I;
To suffer shame and such disgrace,
On Mount Calvary take my place;
Then I ask myself the question, "Who am I?"
Who am I that a King would bleed and die for?
Who am I that He would pray: "Not my will, thine for?"
The answer I may never know,
Why He ever loved me so;
That to an old rugged cross He would go,
For who am I?
Then I'm reminded of the words,
"I'll leave thee never,
Just be true, I'll give to you a life forever."
Then I wonder what I could have done,
To deserve God's only Son;
To fight my battles till they're won,
O, Who am I?
The original lyrics can be found in the 1862 Edition of "Christian Harmony" shaped-note songbook. The Happy Goodmans recorded and performed Ira Hemphill's version of it found in the 1940's Hemphill Family Songbook my Mother owns a copy of.
I can give you the verses and chorus of what the Goodman's recorded.
Cho. Take me in the Lifeboat. Take me in the lifeboat. It will stand the raging storm. Take me in the lifeboat (oh) take me in the lifeboat. It will bear my spirit o'er.
V1. Come brother,sister, let's don't fall asleep! Pray night and day or you'll sink in the deep! Mothers and fathers are crying aloud: Crying "Won't you take us in the lifeboat?"
Chorus: Take me in the Lifeboat....
V2: As the boat goes sailing thru' life's troubled tide, let Jesus lead you, let Him be your Guide. Then on Heaven's Portal you'll be safe evermore: Safe because you boarded the Lifeboat.
Chorus: Take me in the Lifeboat....It will bear my spirit Home. (final chorus ONLY)
In the original Christian Harmony songbook there are 14 verses. My copy is damaged so I can't make out all the words to all 14 verses. Many of the very old Hymns had this many or MORE verses.
As I wake up with the morning of each day that passes by,
And I listen to the sounds upon my ear;
I can't help but keep a watch toward the eastern sky,
And I wonder if the trumpet will be the next sound that I hear.
What a beautiful day for the Lord to come again,
What a beautiful day for Him to take His children home;
How I long to see His face and to touch His nail-scarred hands,
What a beautiful day for the Lord to come again.
Oh my earthly disappointments and trials here below,
Fade away when I remember His last words;
He said He'd return and receive His children unto Him,
And I'm longing just to look upon the face of my Lord.
Oh, what a beautiful day for the Lord to come again,
What a beautiful day for Him to take His children home;
How I long to see His face and to touch His nail-scarred hands,
What a beautiful day for the Lord to come again.
What a beautiful day for the Lord to come again,
Again!
