If its just a pneumonia you wouldn't need a CT scan but scans are done in pneumonia to detect complications such as abscess formation or to look for an underlying cause such as tumour. These show up better if contrast agent is injected and would be essential for tumour staging. Very rarely people are allergic to the contrast and then a scan without contrast is better than nothing. Look on the bright side though-you won't need contrast agent up your @r5e as you might for an abdo scan!
