You don't have to configure the email app if you don't want to use the iPad for email. You can if you want. The procedure is different than any laptop for setting up the server and passwords for your email.
Notebook laptops currently still have more to offer than an ipad. Netbooks have a physical keyboard, which comes in handy for those who spend a lot of time writing emails / essays / etc. A notebook also has a more full-fledged operating system that an ipad.
