Hooking a blu ray player up to a non HDTV or standard definition tv is a waste of money. You will get as good a picture from a standard DVD player. Blu ray players output their high definition signal through the HDMI cable and as such give you the same picture as a DVD player on a standard definition tv.

A Sony Blu Ray player is basically a very high class DVD player. It plays Blu ray discs and the movies on them are in the clearest definition possible with today's technology. They also have really superior sound quality, however are still a bit pricey, compared to DVDs.
Every Blu ray player I ever saw will deliver non-HD images to a non-HD TV. But you will only get the full 1080p (or whatever) on a full HD monitor.
