There are two answers to the question - Digital or analog. Here is the reason why:

Digital signal are very robust signals as long as they do not fall below a certain strength and quality. As long as the signal is above that threshold, a receiver should be able to interpret the data correctly. That means a full quality image even though the signal may only just be above the strength and quality threshold.

Analog signals need a higher signal strength and quality to achieve full quality images at the receiver. As the signal strength and quality reduce, more noise and other distortion can be detected in the image. Despite this, a signal strength and quality far lower than an equivalent digital signal will still be received. The image may be degraded to the point where noise is intrusive, but the content can still be seen.

Broadcasters take into account the differing requirements of digital television and will make efforts to ensure that the signals received are of sufficient quality to provide reliable programs.

It is perhaps worth pointing out that signal strength and signal quality are two separate measurements. Quality is just as important as strength so signal strength alone will not guarantee good reception in all cases.

If you have a digital tv and an outdoor antennae do you need a converter box?

In the US the answer is probably not. Digital and analog TV broadcasts use the same frequencies and antennas. Digital TV is more fussy about signal quality than the older analog signals. So if you get marginal analog reception, figure on getting a new antenna for digital. The idea that there are special HDTV antennas is just marketing hype. Any antenna that gives you better digtial reception will also give you better digital reception.

Can you convert a TV to digital TV?

It is not possible to convert an analog television to a digital television. However, by using a digital set top receiver, it is possible to receive digital signals and deliver them as an analog signal to an analog television. Digital receivers are not expensive, starting at around $25 in US and £20 in the UK. They will allow all terrestrial channels to be received in the same way that a digital television will. Cable and satellite receivers can also receive digital signals and will provide an analog output that can be used with older televisions. With these options, there is no need to replace analog televisions right away. Remember that analog only televisions will not be HD so don't expect a sudden increase in picture quality when the digital receivers are used.

Can you use old antena with converter box to get HD on your anolog tv?

For most people, their old antenna will work just fine. Don't let the people at the electronics store fool you, there is no such thing as an "HD antenna." There is nothing special that needs to be done to an antenna to receive HD signals. In fact, many of the antennas that are being marketed as "HD antennas" are inferior UHF-only antennas that receive a smaller set of signals than your old antenna. However, some people who were barely receiving an analog signal may need to buy a better antenna. Also, if the location of the digital transmitter has changed or the signal strength of the TV station has changed, you may need to re-aim or replace your old antenna. Simply plug the old antenna into the converter box and then plug the converter box into your old TV where the antenna used to go and you will be fine. The converter box will tune in a digital station (some digital stations are HD, some are not) and convert the digital signal into an old-fashioned analog standard definition signal and feed it into your old analog TV. You will not be able to watch shows in HD on your old analog TV, but you will be able to watch a version of the HD broadcast that has been converted into Standard Definition (SD) for you. You will be able to watch all of the digital stations including the HD ones but you will see them in Standard Definition. Standard Definition is 480i. Digital to Analog converter boxes receive all tv transmissions of 1080P , 1080i , 720P , 480P , 480i and coverts them ALL to 480i to watch on a standard definition NTSC Analog TV.

What are analog and digital signals?

Analog radio signals cause characteristic changes, or modulations, in the radio waves that carry them: amplitude modulation (AM) and frequency modulation (FM). An old technology compared to newer digital signals such as satellite and high definition radio, differences that distinguish analog radio from digital radio include signal characteristics, sound clarity and cost.Type of Signal Transmission1. Carrier waves -- invisible forms of electricity and magnetism that travel wirelessly from radio broadcasting stations to radio receivers -- transmit AM, FM and digital HD radio programs. Digital signals transmit via pulses or digits of binary code, a language based on the numbers 0 and 1, before decoding.Clarity of Sound2. FM analog radio signals encounter interference when large objects such as mountains or buildings enter the intended path of travel, and cannot bend, unlike AM analog signals. An interrupted analog signal results in a crackling, unclear radio station. Digital radio signals generally don't experience interference errors, although bad weather can severely affect satellite stations.Cost3. Most perks have a catch. Satellite radio plays very few commercials, but there's a subscription fee and you must buy a satellite specific receiver. While free, traditional AM/FM radio and HD radio include commercial advertisements. To hear HD radio, you need a specific HD receiver. Digital HD receivers can play both analog and HD radio stations, but traditional analog receivers can stream only AM/FM stations.

Why does your digital tv reception not work in all your rooms?

DTV reception is not as forgiving as analog reception was. A better, stronger signal is need in most cases.

What is meant by sampling in analog to digital conversion?

while conversion of analog signal to digital signal, we need to convert continuous analog signal to discrete signal. this can be done by dividing the analog signal into specific time slots. this process is known as sampling. there is a condition for sampling that can be given as follows. fs<=2fm

Does a digital signal travel farther than an analog signal?

You need to make a distinction between analog and digital signals, and analog and digital data. Digital data can be sent on an analog signal by using a modem. Digital data sent on a digital signal is done over a wire using voltage pulses at two or more levels. Digital signals can't travel very far without amplifiers, but analog signals can cover huge distances, such as with satellite communications and even communications with deep space probes.

Why is microphone useful?

Original. It changes the sound (pressure waves in the air in the room) into a digital signal.Correction:It changes the sound pressure waves into an ANALOG signal. Any digital signal is the result of feeding the analog mic signal into an analog-to-digital converter, typically in a computer's sound card.Original.An electric guitar doesn't need a microphone because it makes a digital signal.Correction:A simple guitar with magnetic pickups creates an ANALOG signal from the motion of the strings, typically tens to low hundreds of millivolts. If you want a digital signal, you need: 1. Analog-to-digital processing in the guitar itself, or2. Analog-to-digital processing externally, such as a computer sound card.Original.An mp3 recording is a digital signal.

Need of demodulation?

Demodulation is needed with modulation becoz modulation it is converting analog to digital signal n we can't understand digital. That's why we require digital to analog converter or demodulator.

What do you need to do to be able to use your old television and aerial antenna after spring 2009?

If your old tv has no built in ATSC Digital Tuner , then you need a digital to analog converter box. This box receives the ATSC Digital Signal and converts it to NTSC Analog , for Tv's that only have a NTSC Analog tuner.

What are defrances between analog and digital?

The differences between analogue and digital is in the transmission of signals. Analogue technology will transmit a signal wave in its original format but in digital technology, the analogue wave is sampled and turned into numbers which are stored in digital devices.

Will a digital tv still receive and process an analog signal from an outdoor antenna?

No. There will be no analog signal to receive and process from the outdoor antenna. The only signal coming from the outdoor antenna will be digital. When the conversion is complete. You will need to hook up your antenna directly to the TV. Your conversion box will be worthless as far as analog to digital is concerned.

How do you connect dvi PC output to lcd dvi input?

You will need a DVI cable. Note that DVI can be a digital signal, an analog signal or both. Look in the manuals the see which the computer and monitor support. It is normally digital, which might be referred to as DVI-D. If analog is supported, it will be called a DVI-A. A DVI connection that carries both will be called a DVI-I. If you find you have a choice, use the digital signal rather than the analog.

Comparison between ADC and DAC?

An ADC, or analog to digital decoder, is used to "translate" analog signals into digital signals. An analog signal can take on any value, such as 0.1V, 0.5V, 4.12V, 5V and so on. A digital signal on the other hand can either be "high" or "low", 1 or 0. A computer can only work with digital signals, and therefore you need to convert an analog signal into a digital signal in order for the computer to be able to work with it. This is what you do when you record sounds or music. Sound is an analog signal and had to be converted with an ADC to a digital signal before it can be used in a compter or stored on a CD. A DAC, or digital to analog decoder is the oposite of the ADC. Here the digital signal is converted into an analog signal. This is what happens when you play music from a CD-plate. On a CD there are a number of holes, which each translates as a 0 or 1. These are read with a laser beam which is reflected back into a receiver whenever the laserbeam hits a hole. This then counts as a 1. When the disk is spinning it produces a stream of 1s and 0s, which togerther form a binary string, such as 00010111011101. The DAC then converts this value into a analogue signal, such as 1.1V, which is then used to power your speaker and produce audible sound.
