You do not HAVE to use them, if you don't want to. There is no harm to your equipment if you do use them, in fact they can only improve your signal in some cases.

How to use a ferrite core?

Ferrite cores are used to suppress electrical noise on conductors. A split ferrite is installed over a conductor as close to the source of noise as possible. A solid ferrite has the conductor routed through it, it may also have several turns of the conductor looped through the donut shaped ferrite. Take a look at a motherboard and you'll see ferrites in use in the power supplies.

You don't need HDMI cables for an HD signal, but if you want to get maximum resolution for your tv (1080 p) you do. The short answer is no, you do not need HDMI Cables just to get an HD signal. BUT HDMI cables transfer the higher-resolution images at a faster rate, giving you a much better picture.

What is a ferrite suppression sleeve?

A ferrite suppression sleeve is a cylinder of ferrite with a hole in the middle through which a wire or cable is passed. This device adds a "chunk" of inductance around the wire, and this results in the suppression of higher frequency signals. Power supply cables and other conductors that carry low frequency alternating current may have one of these sleeves installed. They are used to suppress high frequency interference and keep it from getting into or out of the equipment where they are installed. Use the link below to see some images and get a feel for what these are so you'll be able to spot them in the future.

Probably the same guy who first stuck a battery in a car. A battery by itself isn't any use, you need to hook it up to something, and that's when you need cables.
