No. Grants do not have to be paid back as long as you meet your school's SAP (Satisfactory Academic Progress). Which just means for most schools that you pass half of your classes. Even if loans are offered from the government they still have to be paid back, but grants do NOT have to be paid back.

∙ 14y agoFederal Pell Grants do not have to be repaid once a student completes their academic year in which the award was granted. Federal grants are free money (federal need based gift aid) awarded to students to assist them in accessing higher education at undergraduate level.
If a student receives a Pell grant but fails to attend or drops out of the education program it is intended to be used for, they will be required to repay any money they were awarded to them for the duration that the grant money was not used for. The Pell grant is awarded to cover the expenses for attending college and this repayment system is in-place to prevent people from taking advantage of the grant money for other purposes.
