You pull a cord on a city bus to let the driver you want the bus to stop, and let you off when it is safe to do so. It's not the same as the emergency cord on a train that is pulled to bring the train to a sudden stop.
When your riding the bus, you only pull the cord "When You Reach Your Stop". Remember don't pull the button unless your getting off, because less stops get you to your destination faster!
