Angel appears in every season of Buffy at least once, with the exception of season 6.
In season 4, which aired along side the first season of Angel, he appears twice, to resolve his and Buffy's relationship issues, whereby the two agree to remain apart. (Note that David Boreanaz appears in the season 4 premier, "The Freshman", but not as Angel, rather as a man whom Buffy mistakes for Angel from a distance.)
He appears once in season 5 (not counting flashbacks), in "Forever", to console Buffy after her mother's death.
(He does not appear at all in season 6, after Buffy's death and resurrection, since he was distracted at the time by Darla and her pregnancy.)
In season 7, he appears in the final two episodes -- at the end of "The End of Days" and the beginning of "Chosen", having arrived to give Buffy the amulet he received from Wolfram & Hart.

∙ 13y agoIn season three, angel is resurrected, presumably by 'the first'. Buffy finds him and takes care of him, but they are determined to stay 'just friends'. After a while they realise that's idiotic and start dating again, until there rather abrupt breakup in the last few episodes of the season, apparently 'for Buffy's own good.' Angel stays until the Big Bad is defeated and then leaves town for good.

For example, at the end of Season 4 of Angel, Angel is given an amulet to deliver to Buffy so she can win an important battle. When Angel arrives in Buffy's show, he gives it to her, with little needed explanation as to what happened in Angel's show. By watching both, it's definitely easier to understand plot points, but again, it is not completely essential. Anyway, Angel started during Buffy's 4th season, so the seasons coincide as such, "Buffy" and "Angel" respectively: 4-1, 5-2, 6-3, 7-4, then Angel's last season, 5, happens after "Buffy" has ended.
