Safeway doesn't offer health insurance to union employees. However, all safeway employees; store level (non manager), truck driver, warehouse worker, etc are covered under union contracts. These employees pay union dues, and in return they are given health insurance, and other goodies...

As for backstage and corporate employees that are non-union... you are eligible for health insurance if you feel like paying between $10-$20 a week (if you're single) or $50+ a week for a family.

That's in a nutshell. Non-union employees at Genuardi's Eastern division can pay up to $145 a week for family coverage, with Health Incentives discounts for not smoking, not being overweight and normal blood pressure. If an employee, or his or her family member(s) do not meet requirements, it costs more. Part-timers who work at least twenty hours a week (though few are scheduled that many hours) are eligible, but it also costs more. If an employee's spouse has access to insurance through their employer but chooses not to take it, Safeway adds a $35 per week surcharge for coverage. Rates have gone up every year since Safeway bought the division, while hourly pay and salaries have stagnated. Essentially, incomes have decreased as health care deductions have increased. These claims can be documented.
