Swimming is a sport that particularly is favored in Suriname. Anthony Conrad Nesty [b. November 25, 1967] popularized the sport when he won a gold medal in the 100 meter butterfly at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. He was the second black athlete to win an Olympic medal in swimming.
The first black athlete to receive Olympic gold was Enith Sitjtje Maria Brigitha [b. April 15, 1955]. He won two bronze medals for the Netherlands in the 100 meter and 200 meter freestyles at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Canada.
