Answer:
a religious spirit is one that strictly follows teachings rather than has a relationship with God.
what God really wants from us is a relationship because He created us and He loves us and He is a relational God. He wants follow the teachings in the bible not because we feel like we have to but because we want to.
I work with a youth group and one of the examples of this I like to give is chores vs. an act of service.
let's say one of your chores is to clean the kitchen. when you're forced to do it or you feel like you're obligated to do it, it's just that: a chore. now let's say you decide to clean the kitchen because you know that your parents or roommate or husband/wife will appreciate it and you want to do something for them because you love them...then, it doesn't feel like a chore.
that's essentially what it's like to love the Lord. i choose to obey the commands and laws he gave us not because i feel like i have to but because i love God and i know it pleases him.
