Cows not only moo but they also grunt, bellow, and make a short deep sound that usually is used to get attention of their calves. Cows do sometimes let out loud sharp bellows, and this is can happen when a cow is confused about its surroundings, however cows do not scream and especially not as they are dying. A sick and dying cow usually goes and finds a place to lay down where she does not hurt as bad (because she cannot comprehend why she feels the way she does just that she does not feel good) and just like any other being she will pass away. In slaughter plants cows are killed fast and efficiently enough that they are usually dead before they even know what is going on.

Every language transliterates animal sounds a bit differently (See Link below). Cows go "moo" only in English and a few other languages. They are also said to go:

  • Moe
  • Boe
  • Ammuu
  • Meuh
  • mmuuh
  • mau

when lowing and when upset, angry or just want privacy:

  • sauk
  • snort
  • prarek
  • pfft
  • buff

Or as Ogden Nash said, "The cow is of the bovine ilk, one end is moo the other milk."

Sometimes. Cats make a meowing sound but if they are desperate or just want to be annoying, they can let out this piercing noise that sounds like a moo.

But in farm animals, cows say moo unless they are very confused.
