It affects your brain by shutting down the sensory filters.

This causes your brain to get all the details of your environment at once, which overloads it and can cause sensory overlap (i.e. seeing sounds or tasting colors).

It can also cause distortions of reality due to the sensory overload (hallucinations).

The physical affects include dilated pupils and a contraction of blood vessels, which raises your temperature and increases your heart rate, so you sweat a lot.

But it doesn't affect your organs, and has no physical affects that last longer than the trip itself (aside from possible soreness from the increase in physical activity while on the drug).
