Air is a mixture of different gases but the most notable of these are Nitrogen, Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide.

As you heat any matter you increase the kinetic energy the particles of that matter have. An increase in kinetic energy means that the particles move more and take up more space. This is called lowering the density.

The effect of this is to have less particles per unit area which, therefore, means that each unit area will have significantly less mass than the same unit area of cooler air.

Things with lower density will float on top of things with higher density therefore warm air will float on cold air.

Air also floats on water due to the differences in density.

As air cools it will sink back down due to the increase in density and therefore increase in mass per unit area. This is the basis for convection currents.
