After 30 minutes aerobic on a Bowflex Treadclimber my systolic pressure dropped by 50 - from 144 to 94 and the diastolic by 20 - from 85 to 65. The effort was fairly intense - sweating after 13 minutes for more than 17 minutes. Others' experiences would be interesting. Please email to kk@rpf.com thanks

Before you read what happens to blood pressure (BP) you should understand what steady state (also called steady rate) exercise is. Steady state during exercise is the balance between the energy that the working muscles need and the amount of ATP (energy) supplied by aerobic metabolism (aerobic = with oxygen). So, energy needed is matched with energy supplied. At this point there is no accumulation of lactate in the blood (lactate is the product of anaerobic glycolysis, which is the partial breakdown of glucose without oxygen present). You can achieve many levels of steady state exercise.

At the onset of exercise or when you increase the intensity your BP rises for a few reasons. First, heart rate and stroke volume (amount of blood ejected from the heart per beat) increase because hormones epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine (noradrenaline) get released.

These cause the heart to beat faster and harder. This pumps more blood out of the heart and into your vasculature system (arteries and veins). *Ex. When you turn the hose on higher, more water comes out and faster, and the hose swells, which is the increase in BP. Second, as your muscles contract they squeeze against the veins (arteries take blood away from the heart, veins bring it back) and this causes momentary but significant increases in blood pressure.

Typically it is mainly your systolic blood pressure (pressure in the arteries as your heart is pumping blood out) that rises and not so much diastolic pressure (pressure during the relaxation of the heart as it fills for the next contraction or beat). So basically to answer your question quicker, it rises to maintain the Mean Arterial Pressure set point.

Yes, how much depends on how in shape you are. If you are in bad shape the heart is going to have to work that much harder to properly perfuse the blood thru your body so it goes up, good shape it also increase but not as much since your body can handle more

Steady-state exercise is when you take your time to exercise no matter what state you are in e.g. You can be very drunk whilst exercising.

Why and how does blood pressure change during steady state exercise?

Stroke volume: Stroke volume is the amount of blood ejected per beat from left ventricle and measured in ml/beat. Stroke volume to its highest during sub maximal exercise and doesn't increase during maximal exercise. The greatest increase of stroke volume increases in the transition from rest to moderate exercise, during maximal exercise stroke volume doesn't go over its peak of 120 - 140 per minute Starling's law states that the stroke volume is limited towards the venous return, of which is the amount of the blood that is available to enter the left atrium and pass to the left ventricle
