Does culture affect language? |
Answer
Yes. Consider the greek god Mercury - considered to be the messenger of the gods and therefore fleet of foot. His attributes were sometimes applied to people or situations that were fast changing - to be like mercury, which soon got shortened down to a single word - mercurial. There are many such words derived from ledgend in just this way consider: herculean, saturn, gaia.
Also pieces of clothing designed or invented to fill a environmental or cultural need can have their name extended to fill descriptive needs. Consider veil, boot, strap, mask; as in veiled in secrecy, given the boot, strapped, we all wear a mask and our face grows to fit it.
And of course all inventions (cultural or otherwise) require a name. Consider circumcision. Would the word exist if there wasn't the cultural ceremony.
