Certain medications and eating too much sodium causes some people to retain water. The best way to lose water weight is to either eat less less sodium, or drink eight to ten glasses of water a day. Drinking water flushes excess sodium from the body and reduces water weight.

Drinking water is a good habit in general. It is considered as universal naturopathy. It can help you feel fuller so you eat less. It also helps to flush out your system. Water helps in weight loss if you drink a lot of it instead of so much food. Water is healthy. Drinking enough is a good idea, but drinking more than you you need won't helpyou with anything. A big glass before a meal can help curb your hunger and make it easier for you to control yopur portion sizes.

Drinking water while you are trying to lose weight helps keep you hydrated. However, you should not drink excessive amounts by substituting it for food that you might otherwise eat. Instead plan your meals so that you have the right balance of protein, vegetables and fruit.

Answer

The answer to this question is quite misunderstood. Water itself is not a "super drink" for loosing weight, but rather is a neutral way of keeping hydrated. Water provides no energy to the human body, so how does it help with weight loss?

As mentioned earlier, water contains no special compound that helps with burning fat, but rather doesn't contain the nasties that are found in all the other drinks, and that's where its strength lies. It provides more hydration without additional unhealthier products.

Consider this. You've just worked up a well earned sweat at the gym, and are really feeling pleased with yourself for progressing well. However, after exercising so intensely you are feeling quite thirsty (and rightly so). So you enter the corner shop, and here are your choices:

Soft Drink is a big no no. It contains over 50 grams of sugar (that may not sound like a lot, but how does 10-15 teaspoons sound?). All that valuable work will be lost, especially just after a workout.

Energy Drinks shouldn't be approached after exercise (in fact for a healthy diet, shouldn't be approached at all).

For both of these drinks its important to note that "no sugar" doesn't necessarily mean "Go out, have fun and drink as much as you want," for you see there is another ingredient used as an alternative to sugar. Caffeine has been proven to decrease insulin levels (a hormone that regulates the amount of carbohydrates in taken by the body) and increase appetite. If your really interested in this information there's a great answer of Wikianswers on how Caffeine hinders weight loss.

Alcohol is definitely a must not when trying to loose weight (well, have a drink or to every so often but don't over do it). It contains more energy than you might think, and it actually makes you thirstier, so really there's theoretically no point to it.

But what about Water? Its the perfect option. No excess energy, yet it still delivers maximum hydration. It's not the drink itself that makes you loose weight, but the action of replacing it with something not as healthy.

Sports Drinks like Gatorade, Powerade, Energade, Lucozade, what ever - ade may be slightly better than water, but only if you've truly earned it. I'm talking about activity in excess of over one hour consistently (like running, triathlon) or two hours inconsistently (stop start events like soccer, Rugby etc).

Remember, its not the drink itself that's magical, but the effect it will have when being replaced for something unhealthier.
