Can you collect unemployment after being let go from working at a church?

Not unless your church organization voluntarily elected to pay unemployment insurance. Churches, even the conglomerates, are not required to pay unemployment insurance and most do not. They are required to tell you when they hire you that they do not pay into the system. Even if you work for a church on the social service or financial side, they still do not pay unemployment insurance and you do not qualify for unemployment if they lay you off. Some churches act responsibly and pay into the system or allow their members to draw unemployment from the state and reimburse the state for the benefits. Most do not. Unfortunately in this recession, churches are laying off more employees than in previous times and without any severance these employees have no safety net. I am one of these employees and have been without income for six months. Never will I ever work for a church again.

Can you qualify for unemployment if fired in Georgia?

If you don't believe that you are at fault for the termination, file for unemployment and if they deny it, appeal. One of my relatives went through this situation. She was wrongfully terminated resulting in unemployment being denied when she filed. She appealed the unemployment decision, when they contacted her former employer, they couldn't find where she had been written up or had negative info added to her HR file. She was able to receive unemployment for over a year until she found a new job.

How did unemployment compensation come into being?

Benefits are paid by the state from a special fund. The fund gets its money from employers, who pay a tax specifically for this program. The funding mechanism is very different from a system such as workers' compensation, in which an employee receives payments directly from an employer through the employer's insurance company. It is also different from benefit programs that use state general fund money. The fund that pays unemployment insurance benefits is not available for other purposes.
