  • Great question! The hair you see on your head cannot turn gray, it grows in that way. The hair above the scalp is dead and no longer attached to the source that gives it its structure. The transformation to gray happens below the scalp, within the hair follicle and each hair changes color in its own time. To understand how hair turns gray, it's necessary to learn a bit about the makeup of hair and the science of hair growth.
  • Each hair consists of a root bulb, a follicle (below the skin) and a shaft (above the skin.) The bulb sits in the bottom of the hair follicle where it is nourished by the blood. The follicle is a tube like sheath that encases the growing hair below the scalp. It contains pigment cells that produce a chemical called melanin, which gives hair its color. The amount and type of pigment cells in the follicle, determines the color of the hair. As we age, pigment producing cells slow down production, depositing less and less color to the hair. When the follicle contains fewer pigment cells, the hair strand will become more transparent. Eventually, these cells die out and hair becomes colorless, looking gray, silver or white.
  • When and how you gray is determined mostly by genetics, so your parents and grandparents will give you a good idea as to when you can expect to turn gray, silver or white. From the onset of spotting those first few gray hairs, till the transition of a full head of gray hair, can take up to 10 years or longer.
