In NYC - Medicaid has paid for my legitimate OxyContin prescriptions for the past 5 years - ONLY with a Pre-Authorization Request (PAR) directly from my prescribing physician's office. The authorization number must always accompany the original secure prescription when being submitted to the pharmacy for dispensing.

Whether this is unique I do not know. In my case, my doctor is a specialist in, and runs the pain management and palliative care department at a major NYC hospital. I am unable to walk without OxyContin (or oxycodone at a specific high dosage). I have tried many other pain medications and have hallucinated, vomited violently or gotten severe headaches from everything except OxyContin (brand) and two different generic versions of OxyContin. I have not tried other options such as Fentanyl or demerol, though I understand them to be more powerful than OxyContin, and I don't feel the need to take anything stronger.
