Mercury is a relatively good conductor of electricity (it used to be used in positioning switches to complete an electric circuit when the switch tipped so that enclosed mercury cam in contact with two terminals e.g. a switch on the lid of a freezer box which turned the light on when the lid was opened).

Mercury is a relatively poor conductor of heat (compared to most other metals).

Yes. it does conduct electricity because it is a metal, even though it is a liquid at room temperature. it is used in many industrial projects.

It is actually a good conductor and is found used in relays and tilt-switches (among other things.)

Even certain lamp-bulbs are made with mercury. The mercury is by the heat involved transformed into a gas and this gas is an exceptionally good conductor that also emit a lot of light (including UV light, but these bulbs normally have a filter that takes this somewhat dangerous spectrum of light away).

Mercury is considered a good electrical conductor. Of course everything is relative - for example, it's not as good a conductor as gold or silver. See the related links

Yes, Mercury is a metal, conductivity is one of metal's characteristics. Back before we'd realized how toxic it was, it was commonly used in tilt switches for instance.

Why do you use mercury in thermometers if it is not a good conductor of heat?

- mercury is a liquid metal - cooling and heating are easy reversible - cooling and heating are rapid - the relation between the temperature and the thermal expansion of mercury is linear

Can an overhead conductor carry more current on a cold day as compared to a hot day?

The only limit on how much current the conductor can carry, regardless ofthe weather, is the amount of current that causes the conductor to melt. The current in such a conductor depends on the voltage between its ends, and on the resistance of the conductor. The resistance of the conductor issomewhat less when it's cold, so a given voltage would result in more current.

What is a good conductor?

Gold, silver, and copper are a few. Anything with free electrons will conduct to one degree or another. An aluminum ladder placed against a power line will work very well too.===============================================================Silver is the best conductor. Copper is second. Gold is third. Aluminum is fourth, and is still good enough to be used in electric lines. Mercury is about half way down the list of elements, and is still good enough to be used in mercury switches. Here is a list of conductorssilvercoppergoldaluminumironsteelbrassbronzemercurygraphitedirty waterconcrete

Is Magnesium Chloride a good conductor?

Magnesium chloride is a good conductor if melted or dissolved in an ionization promoting solvent; as a solid it is not a good conductor.

Is boron a good conductor of electricity?

Boron is not a good conductor of electricity at room temperature, but is a good conductor at a high temperature.
