The rusty nail weighs more. Rust is iron oxide, a molecule consisting of iron and oxygen. The mass of the iron in the rust molecules comes from the original nail, but the mass of the oxygen has come from the air. When rust forms on iron, the mass of the iron object is increased by the mass of the oxygen that has combined with some of the iron.

Yes, rust (iron oxide) would increase the weight of a nail. This is due to the additional mass of the oxygen which is bonded to the nail. The change would likely be very very small (perhaps difficult to measure without precise, lab-grade equipment).

A rusty nail is heavier as it contains not only the original metal but also the oxygen and water of hydration that made it rust. This change in mass is small however as the Atomic Mass of the metal atoms is several times that of the atomic mass of the oxygen and molecular mass of the water of hydration that have been added.

Yes absolutely it does. Rust is Iron with oxygen added as rust is an oxide of iron. In multiple scientific tests this has been proven. Common sense says it is true also.

Yes, nails are Iron while rust is Iron oxide so when oxygen added the mass becomes increased.

The weight (mass) would increase because the iron (Fe) is turning mostly into iron oxide (Fe2O3). So, the weight would increase by the amount of oxygen (and water) that have been added.

Does rust increase the weight of metal?

It will add mass to the nail. When the chemical reaction of rusting takes place, some oxygen is bounded to the nail. The oxygen is what increases the mass.

Whythe mass of a rusted nail would be great than the mass of the nail before it rust?

Because a rusty nail still contains the same amount of iron that was present in the unrusted nail only it now contains the additonal weight of the oxygen which has combined with the iron to form rust.
