The main reason migraine causes nausea and vomiting is called gastroparesis.

What this means that the normal forward motion of your digestive tract comes to a standstill. In short, food and saliva end up hanging out in your stomach for too long - causing nausea and vomiting.

Other causes can be the sensitivity to smells that migraine can cause, where even exposure to an everyday smell, like kitty litter, can causing vomiting.

Some people react to intense pain with vomiting as well, so that can certainly play a part.

The nausea and vomiting caused by migraine can be one of the more debilitating symptoms. It is only dangerous if it becomes prolonged and puts you at risk for dehydration.

There are versions of migraine abortive medications (nasal sprays, oral dissolving tablets, injections) which can help bypass your stomach to end your migraine, so you don't have to worry about throwing up the medication.

There are also versions of anti-nausea medications (suppositories, oral dissolving tablets) that your doctor can prescribe so that you can continue to take other medications that you take by mouth.

What does it mean when you vomit blood and have a migraine?

Changes in vision and nausea and vomiting are all common symptoms of migraine headaches known as Classic Migraine, or Migraine with Aura. Not all people have migraines with those symptoms, but many people do. If you normally get migraines and suddenly have a change where your head pain is accompanied by new symptoms, it is always wise to get it checked out by a physician. If your "migraine" is right after a recent head injury and you begin to have symptoms such as blurred vision and vomiting, you need to go to the emergency room, as you may have a closed head injury such as a concussion or bleed to the brain.
