Mississippi Learners Permit
Mississippi has a three-step process for teens to get their licenses. First, a 15-year-old can get a learner's permit, allowing them to drive with a licensed adult who is at least 21. They can get an intermediate license six months later, allowing them to drive without supervision between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. They can then apply for a regular license at 16. All Mississippi drivers under the age of 18 are prohibited from driving between 10 pm and 6 am unless supervised by a 21 year-old, licensed driver.
If they are 14 and in 9th grade or higher, they can also obtain a learner's permit to take Driver's Ed. However, it is only valid for the duration of the course and only with their driving instructor.
House Bill 185 is currenly on the books for the 2007 regular session. If passed into law, the ages would raise to 14 1/2 for Driver's Ed, 15 1/2 for a standard permit, and 16 1/2 for a regular license.
