The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) expects it's members to be 'honest in all things'. However, the Church has no power to dictate what Mitt Romney does, he acts for himself. If Mitt Romney were to lie, that would be his choice, but he would not be considered a member 'in good standing' by his church if he were to lie. [To be 'in good standing' in the Mormon church means that you are eligible for certain leadership positions and special Temple ceremonies. Mitt Romney would have to confess his sin to God and his Bishop before he could be considered 'in good standing' again.]

∙ 11y agoThe Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the 'Mormon' church) has a very strict policy of political neutrality. They never comment on or support any candidates or campaigns. The Mormon church has said nothing about Mitt Romney's campaign except to acknowledge that he is a member of the Church.

Not within it, but there are groups that have split from the church that are outside it. The Reorganized church was one. There were "Rigdonites" for a while, who split off after an early member, Sidney Rigdon. Many polygamous groups claim to be associated with the church, although they also are outside groups. Within it, there are are of course people who believe in different causes, or who all read the same publication, or whatever... but if they believe in something contrary to the church, and start actively advocating it, they risk their membership... which is why splinter groups are outside the church. If you stray from the gospel too far, you can't be inside anymore without lying to your church leaders.

Tax exempt status in the United States is not determined by the doctrines or beliefs of a particular group, but whether they meet other guidelines which define them as a legally registered religious group.
