During the Vietnam War (1945 - 1975), the US Army had more HELICOPTERS (Rotor Wing Aircraft) than all of the branches combined (Air Force, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard).

Taking into account all types of aircraft (fixed wing and helicopters); Today (2010) the US Air Force has far more aircraft than the Army.

What is the worlds largest air force?

The United States has the largest air force in the world. Take note, the US Air Force is not the largest air force in the world based on number of Aircraft. The US Navy/Marine Corps has many more aircraft, and the US Army has more aircraft, mostly helicopters, than any of the other individual branches.

Who are the main users of military aircraft?

The Air Force of a nation usually has more aircraft than the other services combined. If the Navy has aircraft carriers, they need airplanes that can take off and land on those vessels. If the Navy does not have aircraft carriers, they usually have a few land based aircraft. Most Army's have helicopters (aka rotating wing aircraft) and some fixed-wing aircraft. The Marine Corps have a combination of helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. The Coast Guard have their own fleet of land based aircraft. The Air Force is the main users of military aircraft, but, not the only branch to use them. Generally speaking the civilian police/law enforcement agencies do not use military aircraft, except on special occasions.

Can other military branches stop the Air Force?

The US Army has more aircraft than the US Air Force does. The US Navy and the US Marine Corps have their own attack and fighter planes. All branches have a great deal of anti-aircraft weapons, from individual shoulder fired missiles to ship born anti-missile systems and ground installations. It would be an ugly fight. The Air Force can stop many different types of military branches because they are the fastest and the strongest. The Air Force has some aircraft that can't get shot down and can spy on their enemies. They also have planes that can destroy air, sea and ground targets.
