Antibiotics in any class can alter the metabolism of Oral Contraceptives. The reason that you can take a pill once daily and not worry about fluctuating hormone levels is that after you swallow the pill it undergoes hepatobiliary recirculation. Pretty much means that microorganisms in your gut alter the drug, it gets sent back to the liver, which changes it back, and the cycle starts over meanwhile the drug is effective. If you take antibiotics you have the potential of killing those little helpful organisms, and enhance the clearance of the drug from the body. Enzymatic issues are also present when using these drugs together. The best advice is to use other protection while you are antibiotic and for another week after you finish.
