Does the car need to be in your name if the insurance is?

Answer

Yes. If there is a total loss and the insurance company want's to buy out the car, they will require the title. It needs to match the named insured or they may not pay the claim.

Answer

Not to mention if these names don't match and a police officer or the DMV catch it, they will probably ask you for the keys then impound the vehicle.
