I have not used this machine, but I have used a similar machine when I was in the army. The machine I used was the exact same machine as far as looks the only difference was that you had to add free weights to the post where you lock your feet in. The answer to the question is YES! These types of machines work you lower back/gluteus out in a way that no other machine or exercise can. This machine did help me eliminate lower Back pain I was suffering from. I think this machine is even better then a roman chair when it comes to working out your lower back. If you Google, "Reverse Roman Chair". You will see similar machines to the Core Evolution. If you were to get this machine and didnt like it you can always send it back. It would be a pain bring it to the post office if you did want to send back.
Evolution doesn't work like that. Since evolution is an ongoing, continuous mechanism, every species that we see is the 'newest' species in its particular line

The work done by a machine is called work output
There are at least 3 exercises that will work out your core. Swimming, jumping rope, and jumping hurdles will work out your core.
"The Gazelle Edge is a machine that can work out your entire body. That includes your arms, legs, quads, glutes, triceps, biceps, pecs, and more. You can also work your core and build up your muscle."
