The entropy of a system cannot decrease unless heat is leaving it. This means that if the system is closed (i.e. nothing gets in or out - and that means absolutely nothing) then entropy cannot decrease, therefore it must stay constant or increase. If the system is open (movement between the system and its surroundings is possible) then entropy can decrease, increase or stay constant; both leave the possibility of staying constant.

How does fragmentation affect interior species?

As fragmentation occurs, the interior area of the patch decreases. This results in a reduced habitat area for interior species. Thus, interior species experience a reduction in population over time as they lose habitat to fragmentation.

How are the nervous system and the endocrine system different?

The nervous system can affect only nearby cells. APEX

What are the two Laws of Thermodynamics and what do they tell us about organisms seemingly defying entropy?

The first law of thermodynamics is often called the ''Law of Conservation of Energy''. This law suggests that energy. can be transferred from one system to another in many forms. Also, it can not be ''created'' or ''destroyed''. Thus, the total amount of energy available in the Universe is constant.Second Law of ThermodynamicsAs a result of this fact of thermodynamics, natural processes that involve energy transfer must have one direction, and all natural processes are irreversible. This law also predicts that the entropy of an isolated system always increases with time. Entropy is the measure of the disorder or randomness of energy and matter in a system.Third Law of ThermodynamicsThe third law of thermodynamics states that if all the thermal motion of molecules kinetic energy could be removed, a state called absolute zero would occur. Absolute zero results in a temperature of 0 Kelvins or -273.15° Celsius

Why must all things die?

The human body degrades over time, and eventually loses the ability to heal. If you honestly think about it we can't live forever, No matter what you believe is the reason f life. For life to exist there must be a continual process of change; without sickness, poverty, violence and death there would be no change.

How is alcohol and the respiratory system related?

Alcohol affects the respiratory system in many ways such as slower breathing and sleep apnea in many individuals. These can be considered as shorter term effects, but over time, many individuals can potentially experience more long term effects such as those experienced as a result of lack of oxygen to the brain due to sleep apnea related issues. Heavy drinkers, over time, are also at risk of developing diseases and conditions affecting the respiratory system such as pneumonia due to a weaker immune system that can be experienced due to consumption of alcohol. - plc

What statement best describes the second law of thermodynamics?

What does the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics say about Direction of heat transfer?

In nature heat only moves naturally from warmer systems to cooler systems. One direction only. Never naturally from something cold into something hot. We can pump heat out of a system by doing work on it, such as a refrigerator where the refrigerant is compressed - making it much hotter than the surroundings - then letting it give off heat to the surroundings, then expanding it across a valve where the evaporation and expansion causes it to get colder than the inside of the fridge - then allowing it to absorb heat from the inside of the fridge, then sending it back to the compressor to start all over again.

Did the ice's entropy increase or decrease over time?

Which is a statement of the second law of thermodynamics?

Entropy tends to increase in a system.

Line graphs show increases or decreases in something over time.

What law states that entropy tends to increase over time?

The Second Law of Thermodynamics.

What does fatigue's mean?

It's a condition whereby the feeling of compassion decreases over time.

What is the law of entropy?

Entropy is the scientific concept of disorder and randomness that has many broad applications across different branches of physics. While it is not a law itself, it is central to understanding the Second Law of Thermodynamics, as objects that are in thermodynamic equilibrium are at their highest state of entropy.

What is the overall effect of the second law of thermodynamics?

The overall effect is that heat moves from what is warm to what is cold. In theory, the entire universe will eventually reach a uniform temperature.

How would you expect a system to change over time based on the second law of thermodynamics?

There can be all sorts of complicated changes; but the one thing that all such changes have in common is that ENTROPY INCREASES. Alternative formulation: the amount of usable energy gets reduced over time.
