Not neccessarily. The number plates indicate the year that the car was first 'Registered'. The car could have been actually made several months, or up to a year earlier, if it has been held in storage, without being sold.

The only way to check when the car was actually made, is to check the VIN (vehicle Identification Number) and compare with the manufacturers database, or other knowledge database (enthusiasts. etc)

The year of registration is used as a guide to when the car would have been 'New', as they are generally registered as soon as possible, for the road.

In the UK the year of registration is indicated by the only two numbers on the plate.

AA 52 ABC, for example, would indicate that the car was registered in the second part of 2002. The first part would have 02.

50 is added to the number for the second part of the year.

Two registration dates are used to even out the sales. People tend to wait for the new numbers to come out, before buying a new car.

The present numbering system came in, in the start of this century. Before that letters were used either before the numbers, or after the numbers.

eg. ABC 123C would be a 'C' reg car of 1965.

H123 ABC would be a car registered in 1970.

You can of course change the number on your car, if you pay money and fill in the right forms. To change it for a personal number plate. You have to have the rights to the number (which can be brought) and you can only put it on the vehicle, as long as it doesent make the car look younger that it really is.

Putting a plate with no year prefix or suffix, can be put on a brand new car. But you cannot put a new number on a car that is older.

What day was my car made?

If you have the VIN number of the vehicle you can decipher the year. Typically the date the vehicle was made may be unavailable. In most cases there is a manufacturers plate or sticker on the inside of the driver's door, located either on the door itself or in the door sill. This plate or sticker may contain the date of manufacture depending on the make and year of the vehicle.
