Herpes zooster can cause shingles. This type of herpes causes chicken pox. It's slightly different then the herpes that causes cold sores and genital herpes. If you have had chicken pox as a child then you could possibly get shingles later in life.

∙ 13y agoThe shingles vaccine will not completely protect everybody who gets it from shingles. However, it undoubtedly does drastically reduce your chances of getting it. And, if you do happen to get it, the severity and length of the pain is greatly reduced. Most importantly though, your chances of the shingles causing severe, permanent nerve damage is reduced. The shingles vaccine is well worth getting.

I checked with my pharmacist and the answer is NO. I need to stop taking valtrex for 30 days and then get the shot. Valtrex kills the virus and since the vaccine has some live virus in it, the valtrex could compromise the point of getting the vaccine. That said, an incident or 2 of herpes is tolerable to the possibility of getting shingles. Shingles has a higher pain and inconvenience factor than a herpes break out. That is my humble opinion.
