Dot Matrix Printer is used while the cost of printing need to be maintained very low. Also when the print area is even very small and the output requirement is on continuous stationary.

A very old one. Split a square up from 9 to 24 times and that's the printer head for each digit. Poor quality. Ink jet.

Inkjets and Laser printers can print pictures, graphs, etc, much better not to mention they have a much wider color palette to pick from. And modern printers can now print photo accurate pictures.
