What year did dr. john v. atanasoff conceive the idea of the antanasoff?

The Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC) was designed and built between 1937 and 194 by John Atanasoff and Clifford Berry at the University of Iowa. It is recognized as the first automatic electronic digital computer.

Who invented the atanasoff-berry computer?

Dr. John Vincent Atanasoff.

What did Dr John Atanasoff invent?

He is most known now for the Atanasoff-Berry Computer, but I'm sure he invented many other things.

Who invented ABC computer science?

The ABC (Atanasoff-Berry Computer) was a non-programmable, digital calculation machine invented by Dr John Atanasoff and his grad student Chris Berry in 1942.

What did Dr John Atansoft and Clifford Berry designed in 1937?

abc computer

What year was the electronic computer invented?

1937, in an Indiana bar by Dr. John Vincent Atanasoff. He and Clifford Berry finished building it in early 1942 but after they left Iowa State University to perform war related work, the machine was soon scrapped when the room it was in needed to be converted to classrooms and the machine was found to be too wide to roll it out through the door.

Who was the First American computer inventor?

Dr. John Vincent Atanasoff

What year did Dr. John create Berry Computer?

John Vincent Atanasoff invented his computer late one night in 1936 in an Indiana bar. He finished it with his graduate student assistant Clifford Berry in early 1942. The computer was used a little by the University Statistics department, but problems with the reliability of the High Speed Card Reader and Punch (probably due to the poor quality of wartime paper) limited its capability. But with the beginning of WW2 both Atanasoff and Berry abandoned it for work on war related projects. The University needed to add more classroom space too, so they attempted to remove the computer from the basement where it was built but found it was about an inch too wide to roll through the doorway. So they removed all of the tubes and put them back in electronics parts storage for reuse and had a welder cut up the rest of the machine. The basement was then divided into several new classrooms. After the war ended Atanasoff returned to the University and enquired with the University's Patent Lawyer about the patentability of his computer. The Lawyer erroneously told him that there was "nothing patentable about it as all future computers will be built like ENIAC", however no computer was ever again built like ENIAC (but its designers Eckert and Mauchly patented ENIAC and used those patents repeatedly to suppress competition by other computer companies). Finally in the early 1970s the Honeywell Computer Company used Atanasoff's testimony in a patent lawsuit to get the ENIAC patents invalidated in court because ENIAC was in part derivative of the prior art of Atanasoff's unpatented computer. At this time his computer was formally named the Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC) to give credit to both equally (Clifford Berry had died several years earlier).

A 1973 Federal Court ruling officially credited Dr. John V. Atanasoff with this invention?

Legally in the US he is considered the inventor of the first electronic digital computer. It was not programmable, it was designed specifically to solve linear simultaneous equations of up to 29 variables.

Why was the Atanasoff-Berry computer invented?

Because Dr. John Vincent Atanasoff had too many physics problems to solve that required the calculation of systems of simultaneous equations that were much too large for the manual methods of the time using either slide rules or mechanical desk calculators.
